We built what the industry was missing.
South Africa invests billions in skills development every year. The training providers who deliver these programmes had no purpose-built technology. They ran on spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups, and filing cabinets. We saw the gap and built Inala - a training project platform designed for the way South African SDPs actually work.
(n.) Xhosa - Abundance. Plenty.
We named ourselves after abundance because that's what we're building toward. Training executed properly creates abundance - for learners, for providers, for South Africa.
Mission
To build the technology that lets South Africa's training providers manage every project properly.
Vision
A South Africa where every learner who enters a programme leaves with skills and a future.
What we believe
Learner-first
The learner is the reason the entire ecosystem exists. We built them their own interface on WhatsApp because empowerment means meeting people where they are.
Discipline creates freedom
Clean data, proper management, structured projects. When the system is disciplined, the business is free to grow.
Built for here
Purpose-built for South Africa's BEE training ecosystem. Built here, for here.
Think bigger
We're for providers who see training as nation-building, not box-ticking.

Our Story
From a spreadsheet problem to a national platform.
The story of Inala is the story of an industry left behind. Here's how we set out to change that.
The Idea
In late 2022, Inala's founders Jason Schwegmann and Jarred Lambert identified a major gap in South Africa's skills development ecosystem.
Despite billions being spent annually on learnerships, apprenticeships, and skills programmes, there was no purpose-built platform designed specifically to manage training projects from end to end.
Training providers were relying on spreadsheets, WhatsApp groups, emails, shared drives, and disconnected systems to manage complex projects involving hundreds or even thousands of learners.
The result was predictable:
- Learners falling through the cracks
- High drop-off rates
- Lost documents and missing evidence
- Missed deadlines and tranche payments
- Poor visibility for employers
- Stressful audits and compliance challenges
Why was an industry responsible for developing South Africa's future workforce still being managed on spreadsheets?
Four Months of Discovery
Before writing a single line of code, the team spent four months speaking to training providers, employers, facilitators, project managers, and industry stakeholders across South Africa.
What they discovered confirmed their hypothesis. The challenges were remarkably consistent across the industry:
- No centralised source of truth
- Manual administration consuming valuable time
- Compliance managed reactively instead of proactively
- Limited visibility into learner progress
- Reporting processes that were slow and labour intensive
- Growing pressure from clients, regulators, and verification requirements
The industry didn't need another generic LMS. It needed an operating system for skills development.
Building Begins
With the problem validated, development of the first Inala MVP began.
The team chose a low-code architecture to move quickly, validate assumptions, and get the product into the hands of real users as fast as possible.
The first version focused on solving the core challenges facing training providers:
- Learner management
- Training and workplace attendance
- Basic reporting
- Centralised information management
Alongside the provider platform, Inala also launched a learner portal, creating a connected experience between learners and project teams.
First Pilot Client Goes Live
After months of development, Inala launched its first live pilot.
The platform operated within a closed environment with a select client, allowing the team to gather feedback, understand real-world workflows, and refine the product based on actual usage rather than assumptions.
The industry was ready for change.
Opening to the Market
Following a successful pilot period, Inala officially launched to the broader market.
The response was encouraging. Training providers across South Africa recognised the need for a purpose-built solution that understood the realities of learnerships, apprenticeships, skills programmes, and workplace-based learning.
Early Growth
Inala welcomed its next wave of clients and began establishing itself within the South African training landscape.
What started as a simple idea was becoming a growing community of forward-thinking providers committed to delivering better learner outcomes through technology.
Scaling the Vision
As adoption increased, so did the ambition.
The team expanded its footprint across South Africa, establishing on-the-ground support in both Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The platform continued to evolve, supporting increasingly complex projects and growing to serve more than 100,000 users across the ecosystem.
Along the way, Inala launched new products, expanded its capabilities, and deepened its understanding of the unique challenges facing the skills development sector.
A New Chapter
By 2026, it became clear that the future of learner engagement was mobile-first.
The team made the bold decision to completely rebuild the platform. This included:
- A full database migration
- A redesigned architecture
- Moving from low-code foundations to a full-stack codebase
- Reimagining the learner experience through WhatsApp
Meet learners where they already are. This transformation laid the foundation for the next generation of Inala, a platform built to scale nationally while delivering a simpler, more accessible experience for learners and providers alike.
Empower the learner. Compliance follows. Abundance flows.
